Music
Periphery : Imagine that you have an irritating, pointed itch. Imagine that the itch is internal and the simple task of scratching can bring you no relief. Place that same itch in the back of your head, deep into your brain. Whenever I take the opportunity to listen to Periphery's music, it gives me the release from that ever-present itch in my mind. I had added them to my list of artists to check out, but did not get around to listening to them until a couple years later in 2024, after a long break from listening to much music. Ever since that moment, though, their discography has become a daily constant in my ears.
your best friend jippy : I have listened to several of jippy's beat tapes, but I believe his magnum opus is BEAT TAPE 38 and I find myself returning to it the most. It is a sizable tape, composed of 38 tracks with a runtime of nearly two hours. The size of this project is not what makes it so appealing, however. I understand it to be an exploration of his creative process completely through his usual expression of choice, audio sampling. I am not familiar with the sources of his samples, so my perspective is taking it in as a whole new piece. He is standing on the shoulders of giants, even saying so within the tracks, but I find that the message it sends is quite clear and aids me on my own path of finding purpose in creative exploration. It is inspirational to be able to have these tracks to point to as a reminder of where I would like to go, even if that place is different from where jippy is and has gone himself. That is actually very fitting for the remix culture that the music is based in.
